Sober Living With Authenticity

Our Hazlet, NJ sober living home was purposefully designed to complement substance use disorder treatment. The early weeks and months in recovery are more critical than most realize.

For us, a sober house isn’t a business venture or real estate investment—if it were, opening an Airbnb would be much easier. We see our recovery housing program as an opportunity to transform lives.

We do this work because we were called to it, inspired by those who gave back to the recovery community that saved their lives. We are deeply grateful for the privilege of being part of the solution today.

James’ Story

One of the responsibilities we have in recovery is to share our experience, strength and hope with other people. I hope my story is helpful to you. It should also give you some insight into why I decided to open Serenity at Bethany.

My name is James Boozan, and this is the short version of my journey to recovery.

I was born in 1984. I grew up in Hamilton, New Jersey. Like a lot of guys in my generation growing up in the Hamilton area, I had plenty of opportunities, both good ones and bad ones.

When I was 18 years old, I had a series of unfortunate events. A bad breakup, bad car accident etc. . At the time, I thought I was managing it, but I didn’t know much about trauma then.

Depression and anxiety crept up on me and before I knew it, the world started looking really bleak and dark. I had at that time used drugs and alcohol… but never to the degree of abuse that would impact my daily life.

I tried alcohol to numb the emptiness and despair, but drinking wasn’t a solution for anything. Once it wore off, the problems were still there and I still had to face myself. I got a DUI with a fake ID when I was 19 and from there I started experimenting with other drugs.

I found pain pills. For me, in my warped perception at the time, opioids felt like the answer. Everything I was looking for. I was just tired of feeling, because all I was feeling was sad and angry. I didn’t want to feel anything at all. OxyContin and other painkillers seemed to do the trick.

I knew I was playing with fire, but I had still had no idea how low addiction would take me until I found heroin.

My best friend died of a heroin overdose, and my life really started to take a turn for the worse. I was intervened on by several people along with my family and ended up in and out of addiction treatment centers. For the next two years, I spent more time in treatment than I did out in the world.

But, my last rehab experience flipped the script. I ended up in a halfway house after 30 days of a treatment facility, which I had done countless times before. But this time was different.

Because, I finally knew what they meant by “surrendering your will” in recovery. That was the key that opened the door to a sober life for me. I was finally beaten down enough to let go and accept that I didn’t know how to live.
I needed help—-but more important, I wanted help and I was really ready to do whatever they told me to do.

I was lucky enough to get an amazing sober living experience at a great halfway house and it made a HUGE difference to me. I made lifelong friends and learned how to endure daily struggles and rise above with recovering men going through exactly what I was. Coupled with a strong presence in AA, sober living truly saved my life—without a doubt.

My story isn’t unique. I’m like millions of other people who have been fortunate enough to find a solution to addiction, by the grace of my higher power.

The second chance that recovery and sober living gave me inspired me to devote my life to helping people get sober and stay that way. Opening a sober living home in NJ has been one of my goals for many years and I’m incredibly grateful to have been able to do it.

Step Inside, Serenity Awaits.
