Sober Living in NJ

What is Sober Living?

Sober living, sober houses, recovery housing, and sometimes ‘halfway houses’ are all terms for safe places for sober people to live. Sober living homes are often residential homes, like you’d find in any suburban neighborhood. What makes a home a sober living place is the structure, who lives there and how they live.

Sober houses offer a style of communal living where people new to recovery live together and provide one another with moral support and fellowship. They have house rules designed to keep residents safe and accountable. The rules usually include evening curfews, meeting attendance, enrollment in a treatment program. Naturally anything that could be harmful including drugs, alcohol or weapons are strictly prohibited.

But, the best sober living houses in NJ do a lot more than that.

Serenity at Bethany Sober House Rules

A sober living environment doesn’t function without structure and accountability. We have fun in sober living, but we never forget that recovery is serious business. For many of us, getting sober and staying that way is a matter of life and death.

No drugs or alcohol use and/or possession.

This one is obvious, but it must be said. Drug and alcohol use or possession are strictly prohibited here. This includes so-called ‘legal high’ substances such as kratom, kava, Delta-8 or anything else designed to intoxicate.

Respect, honesty and integrity

Part of recovery is learning new behaviors and taking responsibility for ourselves. Residents will treat one another with respect. Lying, cheating and malicious dishonesty are toxic and will not be tolerated. Residents are expected to honor one another’s boundaries, physical or otherwise. Act with integrity.

Participation in substance use disorder treatment.

All residents of Serenity at Bethany will be enrolled in an approved substance use disorder program at the PHP or IOP level of care. Current enrollment in treatment is mandatory to reside at our sober house.

Participation in house meetings and/or outside meetings

Real recovery requires commitment and willingness. Participation in house meetings and any scheduled outside meetings is mandatory, unless special arrangements have been made on a case-by-case basis due to illness, injury or a scheduling conflict.

No weapons or violence.

Serenity at Bethany is a safe and secure place for men and women to build sobriety. Weapons of any kind including, but not limited to firearms, knives, kubotans, batons, etc. are strictly forbidden. Physical violence will not be tolerated. Neither will threatening or cruel language. We are here to support one another, first and foremost. The only thing we fight is addiction.

Conflict resolution

Residents who have a serious disagreement or conflict shall bring it to a member of staff for resolution according to the Sober House Rules. Staff have the final say on any resolution or compromise.

Accountability and ‘negative contracts’

Residents must not only be accountable for their own actions and behavior. They must also report any concerning or dangerous behavior or actions which violate the Sober House Rules. Keeping rule breaking behavior by others a secret is considered a ‘negative contract’ and a violation of the rules.

Privacy and searches

Staff will respect the privacy and dignity of residents as much as possible while keeping them safe. In order to maintain a safe sober living environment, random or conditional searches for drugs, alcohol or other contraband may be executed at any time, within reason.

Random and incidental drug screening

Residents agree to comply with staff requests for random or incidental drug screens to be performed at any time. This is necessary for the safety of all residents and security of our sober house.

Guest and visitor policy

No guests or visitors are allowed without prior permission from a member of staff. Approved visitors may include family members or loved ones who have been pre-screened. Visitors are not permitted in resident bedrooms, they are only allowed in common areas. Overnight guests are prohibited.

Curfews

Recovery requires order and accountability. For the safety of residents and the sanctity of our sober living space, all residents will be subject to a mandatory curfew. The curfew for all residents is 10:00 pm on weekdays and 11:00 pm on weekends. Residents are required to be on property by curfew unless special arrangements have been made in advance with an authorized staff member.

Smoking and vaping

Tobacco products and vaping (nicotine) are permitted only in designated areas. Residents will respect each other’s boundaries and behave responsibly.

Gambling and betting

Sports betting, poker or gambling or any kind is strictly prohibited here. No exceptions. Gambling is an addiction and/or trigger for many people and casinos serve alcohol and expose people in early recovery to dangerous temptations.

Serenity at Bethany: Your Recovery Sanctuary

Building a solid foundation for a lifetime of recovery begins with understanding the fundamentals of recovery. The disease model of addiction, the nature of powerlessness and reliance on a Higher Power.

But, as G.I. Joe taught us, knowing is only half the battle. Building resilient recovery means practicing these principles in all our affairs. It’s not enough to simply know how we’re supposed to live. We need practice.

Serenity at Bethany is a place to get that practice. The fertile ground you need for growing recovery is right here.
